Nosh on: Atlanta’s gluten-free news – November 24, 2017

According to Atlanta Magazine, OFW Pizza is coming back to the Old Forth Ward in mid-2018 as a yet-to-be-named eatery with Anthony Spina at the helm. In a partnership with Billy Streck, of Hampton + Hudson, the restaurant and bar will open in Studioplex’s new phase at 659 Auburn Avenue Northeast. And they will have vegan and gluten-free options (including a gluten-free Grandma Pie) and a full beverage and bar program.

Culver’s is coming to Johns Creek in 2018. The chain is best known for its custard and butter burgers, which can be served on an Udi’s Gluten Free hamburger bun. The buns, which were added in 2015, are served warmed and sealed for guests to assemble. How about a size of sweet potato fries, crinkle fries, green beans, or coleslaw? The Johns Creek/Suwanee location is planned for 3135 Peachtree Parkway, across from the new Extra Space Storage and adjacent to Pop’s wine & spirits. Thanks for the great news TonetoAtl.

Happy Camper’s paleo and gluten-free goodies can be found at East Pole Coffee in Buckhead’s Armour Yards development. Mini loaves and protein cookies made (in a shared kitchen) with brown rice and almond flours are delivered fresh daily. Oats are not certified gluten free.

Let’s hear it for Atlanta Magazine’s Best Gluten-Free Eats winner – Mediterranea! Grant Park’s new neighborhood bistro serves up Mediterranean fare that happens to come from an all gluten-free kitchen. And they offer a full bar and extensive wine list. They proclaim the winningest dishes are the pan-roasted branzino with potatoes and creamy manchego polenta with chili-spiked greens. We love everything on the menu, including the handmade gnocchi and pan seared chicken.

Stop by Perks Coffee (3000 Windy Hill Road, SE near Orange Theory) on Monday, November 27 between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on opening day to get a free cup of the good stuff. They are pouring crafted blends from Rev Coffee Roasters including ice coffee with freshly roasted coffee ice cubes, café glacé (coffee and ice cream blend) and 15 types of herbal teas.

Congrats to Urban Tree Cider for their classic cider being named a runner-up in the drink category of the Made in the South Awards by Garden and Gun Magazine. They are Atlanta’s first cidery and have been open since 2015 with a tasting room and a line of bottled ciders and seasonal cocktails. 🍻They were also awarded Best Hard Cider from the judges at the Georgia Trustees Wine Challenge for Wild Buzz 2017.

Uncle Maddio’s Pizza at Perimeter Village in the Dunwoody shopping center has closed.

Gluten-free recipe: Fall fruit crisp from Delicious Living

Want to wow your guests on Thanksgiving with a homemade dessert that is quick and easy to prepare? A seasonal fruit crisp served warm with a scoop of ice cream fits the bill. And then some.

Fruit crisps can be made in just four easy step, as shown below. And you can use any all-purpose gluten-free flour blend. If it needs to be dairy free too, then substitute Earth Balance’s vegan butter sticks. Choose fruit that is in season (fresh or frozen) and use cane, date, or coconut sugar for added sweetness. Add a little bourbon or wine for a boozy treat that will have them coming back for seconds – maybe thirds!

The best part is you can prepare it the day of Thanksgiving and serve it straight from the oven. It is done when the fruit is bubbling and the crust is golden.

Thanks to Delicious Living for the inspiration, the step-by-step illustration, and, of course, the recipe!

In historic Crabapple, Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails picks ingredients from its garden for contemporary Southern “seed-to-fork” sensibility. One new dish is the charred broccoli, cauliflower and red pears with sweet potato purée, Asher Blue cheese, pickled red onion, candied pecans and sherry maple vinaigrette. I got to try this dish at an event recently and it was a flavor and texture bomb! Simple and local ingredients combine to create the perfect bite of fall.

Stop by Osteria di Mare in Peachtree Corners is serving up brunch on Sundays from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. – the same day kids under the age of 12 are ‘invited’ to dine. Nosh on: Atlanta’s gluten-free news – November 9, 2017

On Saturday, November 11, Concentrics Restaurants ONE. midtown kitchen, The Brasserie and Neighborhood Café at PARISH, TAP and TWO urban licks, are celebrating Veterans Day by offering all active military personnel and veterans with a valid military ID a complimentary lunch or dinner entree.

Happy Birthday to Maggiano’s Little Italy. They turn 26 in November and continue to expand their gluten-free offerings. Those with food allergies/intolerance are forever grateful for the care they take to prepare safe dishes that make dining out a tasty and stress-less event.

A new Schlotzsky’s Austin Eatery just opened on Cobb Parkway November 9th. The new restaurant is a renovation of an existing location, but will feature the brand’s new menu items and design elements. The first Schlotzsky’s Austin Eatery opened last December at Sugarloaf Marketplace in Duluth offering gluten-free pizzas, gluten-free buns for sandwiches and a host of sides and soups. Thanks TonetoATL for the information!

Treehorn Cider is expanding its menu to offer single small pours and opening on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Now you can order all of their ciders in the small pour size used for flights.

Have you heard of the vegan food truck Vego Bistro? It is a dedicated plant-based and gluten-free friendly food truck working on a brick-and-mortar location in Atlanta. The restaurant will be located in the Brookwood Plaza in Cobb County, next to the Austell L.A. Fitness and close to Cobb Hospital. Their plant-based cuisine is served on gluten-free buns and all of the seasonal sides, including macaroni and cheese, salads, fresh squeezed juices, soups and desserts are gluten free. Support their gofundme campaign to finance this expansion and bring another gluten-free restaurant to Atlanta.

Nosh on: Atlanta’s gluten-free news – November 3, 2017

Chefs from 89 local restaurants will be at the Foxhall Resort & Sporting Club this Sunday, November 5th to serve their specialties under the big-top tents at the 17th annual Afternoon in the Country hosted by Les Dames d’Escoffier International. Farmers from our area’s best farms will pair up with chefs alongside fine wines and premium microbrews for this 1-4 p.m. tasting-style event. Entertainment sprawls on Foxhall’s expansive lawn with live music by Theresa Hightower and her jazz band, a cake raffle featuring sweets from Atlanta’s best pastry chefs, and an expansive silent auction offering dining and travel packages and food and wine merchandise. Buy tickets online, $125 for adults 21 and over.

Genuine Pizza will open its first Atlanta location at Phipps Plaza in December. Originated in Miami as Harry’s Pizzeria®, James Beard Award winner Michael Schwartz’s casual pizza restaurant will offer gluten-free pizza on Wildflour Gluten Free Baking Company’s crusts. These crusts are not pre-made and arrive as dough. They are proofed before being cooked, resulting in a light crust with air pockets and a chewy bite. They use a dedicated pizza cutter and each pizza sits on a special mat that it is prepared and cooked on. All of their ingredients are gluten free with the exception of the meatballs.

Gluten Free Cutie bakery is changing up their Thanksgiving ordering procedures. They are not taking pre-orders, rather they are hosting Market Days on Tuesday and Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. Mark your calendar and be sure to stop by on 11/21 from 10-5 and 11/22 from 10-3 to buy your favorite product for turkey day. Choose form green bean casserole, hash brown casserole, herb stuffing, take ‘n bake cinnamon rolls, biscuits, pies, cobblers, scones, cookies, donuts, and cupcakes.

Hampton + Hudson in Inman Park can throw down vegan/gluten-free cuisine with texture and flavor for days. And they offers Pure Abundance’s cashew cheese and Ratio Bakeshop’s (not a dedicated facility) gluten-free buns. The menu is marked with a ‘GF’ by safe options. The chickpea and sweet potato burger with fried Brussels sprouts, chipotle agave aioli, and pure abundance cashew cheese is outstanding. They should bottle and sell that chipotle agave aioli.

Katz Gluten Free has added three flavors of holiday-themed donuts to its online store – and they are on sale: Candy Cane CrunchGingerbread, and Cranberry . As with all of their products, they are free of gluten, dairy, nuts, and soy and come six to a box.

Maggiano’s Pasta Bar is the newest catering option and it feeds 10 people. An order comes with gluten-free pasta (and regular pasta if needed), three proteins (sausage, grilled chicken and seafood) three sauces (Alfredo, meat sauce, and marinara), a large salad and dessert. A nice alternative to traditional catering fare.

Brazilian steakhouse Chama Gaucha opened in the heart of Buckhead in the spring of 2015. Serving up slow-roasted meats (beef, lamb, pork and chicken) table side, family-style sides, warm tapioca cheese rolls with an expansive salad bar filled with meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, and signature salads, they continue to be a welcome addition to Buckhead. Recently, members of the Atlanta Food & Lifestyle Bloggers Society were treated to a night of food, drinks, and outstanding cuisine.

If you haven’t been to a Brazilian steakhouse before, it is an all-you-can eat dining experience where waiters clad in gaucho pants slice more than 12 types of USDA Prime (aged 45 days) fire-roasted meats table side. These meats are seasoned and cooked slowly to allow the natural flavors time to mature. They are served as soon as they are removed from the fire. In addition to meat, the menu also includes Brazilian side dishes of polenta, caramelized bananas, mashed cheesy potatoes, desserts, and a full bar.

I love dining at Chama Gaucha because their Brazilian cooking style lends itself to the gluten-free diet and their service is exemplary. We couldn’t have felt more welcome and at home by the wait staff if they tried. They are constantly offering clean plates, refills on sides, filling beverages and asking how they can make the dining experience better – and they really mean it.

Tell the rotating staff of servers how you like your meat cooked and that is all they will bring for the rest of the night. My favorite cut of the night was a toss up between the garlic steak and the sirloin cooked a glorious shade of medium rare. Both were tender enough to cut with a fork and practically melted in my mouth. I also enjoyed the sirloin, lamb chops, shrimp, bacon wrapped filet, and chicken.

About six months ago, they removed beer from the chicken marinade to ensure all of their meats are gluten free. They consciously chose to expand their offerings to those following a gluten-free diet. What a great decision and one that is truly appreciated by the gluten-free community.

We ended the meal with the flan served with whipped cream and strawberries. The space is gorgeous with many private event areas perfect for holiday parties, etc.

We were so full, it was almost hard to walk to the car. What a wonderful experience and one that should be shared with friends, family, co-workers – you name it.

Make a reservation and head over to Chama Gaucha for a unique dining experience. And come hungry!

Disclosure: I received no compensation for this review, but the meal was provided at no cost. In no way did this influence my opinions and views, which are derived from my personal experience at the restaurant.

Nosh on: Atlanta’s gluten-free news – October 27, 2017

Looking for some Halloween fun this weekend? Put on your costume and head over to Fernbank’s Boo-seum Trick-Or-Treat on Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. for spook-tacularly fun Halloween-themed activities. Enjoy ghoulish games, treats, a costume contest and more.
2B Whole Gluten-Free European Bakery is turning 3 and celebrating with a party Saturday October 28th! There will be Halloween cookie decorating, spooky treats on the menu and a scary photo booth.

Bar Margot’s Halloween cocktail – Boo! Eye See You – is made with mezcal, campari, hibiscus syrup, lime juice, bitters, absinthe, and topped with edible gummy googly eyes. It is only available from October 27 – October 31, it is $13 and is too cute to miss.

Concentrics Restaurant’s newest Atlanta offering, ALLORA, is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch in the TWELVE Hotel Midtown at Atlantic Station. Blending Italian classics with modern techniques and seasonal ingredients, the restaurant offers gluten-free pasta, small plates, creative salads, and entrees. All of their pasta sauces are gluten free and available in full or half sizes.

I had the most amazing gluten-free meal at Chama Gaucha where I learned that all of their meats are safe. About six months ago, they removed beer from the chicken marinade to expand offerings to those following a gluten-free diet. What a great decision and one truly appreciated by the gluten-free community. Open for lunch and dinner, the only place you will find gluten is at the salad bar and it is clearly marked. Even the cheese bread that arrives warm at the table is gluten free. Such a treat!

Nothing Bundt Cakes has added gluten-free chocolate chip cake to its menu in an individual size. It is only .30 more than the wheat-based version and they take steps to prevent cross contact. The gluten-free bundts are baked first thing in the morning after the kitchen has been sanitized. All of the ingredients are stored separately and once they run out, another batch is not prepared. Each bundt is topped with their signature butter cream cheese frosting.

According to TonetoATL, Salata will open their second Atlanta area location next month at Glenridge Point in Sandy Springs.  The new salad joint, like the chain’s first Atlanta area location that opened in Atlantic Station in September, replaces a former Moe’s Southwest Grill. The Glenridge Point location will celebrate its grand opening on Thursday November 9. In advance of their grand opening, the restaurant is offering complimentary “sneak peek” meals that one must register for here.

Need a healthy mid-week pick me up? Stop by Table & Main on  Paleo Wednesday where the restaurant’s special of the night is paleo friendly. Check out the upcoming paleo specials:
  • Nov-1 | Pork & Shiitake Bolognese, pumpkin seed pesto, served over spaghetti
  • Nov-8 | Pork Hot Links, late summer peppers, apples, brussels sprouts & shallots
  • Nov-15 | Turkey Chili, chipotle butternut squash & turkey chili with pumpkin bread
