Summer is rapidly coming to a close, but that hasn’t stopped Atlanta’s thriving gluten-free dining scene from producing tantalizing options for its gluten-free community. Some of the most notable items this week are:
1KEPT has a soft spot for those following a gluten-free diet because the wife’s owner is a celiac. Gluten-free diners can find options in every section of the menu including, but not limited to: black truffle popcorn, succotash and bone marrow, duck confit, and warm kale salad. Here is a sampling of their most popular gluten-free dishes:
- Black Truffle Popcorn w/ Parmesan $6
- Beets & Strawberry Salad, arugula, rhubarb, candied pecans, Point Reyes bleu cheese, burnt honey, lemon $12
- Warm Kale Salad, chorizo, quinoa, carrots, chili oil vinaigrette, mission figs $12
- “Succotash” & Bone Marrow, Vaquero beans, sunchoke, corn, charred savoy cabbage, red pepper $12
- S.C. Shrimp, creole broth, Logan Turnpike Mill grits, cucumber relish, cilantro $22
- Bone-in Pork Chop, sweet potatoes, spicy kohlrabi apple slaw, Woodford BBQ sauce, lacinato kale $24
- Duck Confit, hakurei turnips, kohlrabi puree, arugula, radish, oyster mushrooms, corn $26
- “Day Boat” Scallops, carnival cauliflower + puree, sunchokes, Fuji apples, fennel, brown butter, green garlic oil $27
F& B in Buckhead has refreshed their menu to include an extended selection and variety of plates and most of them are gluten free. I recently attended a seated dinner to sample just some of their most popular items and I was stunned at all of the gluten-free choices. Chef Gabriel Capo has created a menu that appeals to a wide audience with only a scant few items that cannot be modified to be free of gluten. The tuna crudo with chives, basil oil, shallots, fried capers, and grilled lemon juice offers a play on textures missing from most crudo offerings. The french onion and white bean soups are gluten free minus the crouton with fresh fish, steaks, and lobster from Maine available nightly. The restaurant is deceivingly spacious and offers private dining by way of design in three separate ‘corners’. Stop by for happy hour and stay to enjoy a leisurely dinner.
Firebirds Wood Fire Grill is located across the street from Avalon in Alpharetta. Check out their gluten-free menu online and use the Interactive Allergen Tool to filter out additional allergens, like eggs, dairy, fish, MSG, peanuts, shellfish, soy, sulfites, tree nuts, and wheat. A revised menu will appear with only those items fitting the search criteria allowing users to click on any item to see all of the ingredients in the dish. This type of technology should be offered by more restaurants to make the ordering process simpler and put the diners mind at ease.
I-CE-NY, a Thai ice cream shop, is now open on Buford Highway in Doraville. I-CE-NY offers guests rolled ice cream, a Thai specialty. They have seven ice cream base flavors, plus more than 20 mix-in ingredients and 32 toppings. Not all of their mix-ins and toppings are gluten free, so ask before ordering. I-CE-NY is located in Pinetree Plaza, between BoBo Garden and Subway. Thanks ToneToATL for the information!
Saltyard’s globally influenced gluten-free fare ranges from stuffed dates with Canadian bacon to oysters on the 1/2 shell with a prosecco mignonette, or bistro steak frites with horseradish and chimmichuri. Saltyard’s chef/co-owner Nick Leahy keeps food allergies in mind because of his wife. While she’s not gluten-free, she does have some dietary sensitivities and he wanted to create a menu that a broad audience could enjoy. A sampling of Saltyard’s most popular gluten-free items are:
- Stuffed Dates, blue cheese, pecan, Canadian bacon $6
- Raw oysters on the 1/2 shell, house cocktail sauce, prosecco mignonette $15/$30
- Cheese + Charcuterie plate, 3 regional cheeses, 3 artisanal chartcuterie with ale mustard, pickled egg, pickled vegetables, and seasonal chutney $19
- Bistro Steak Frites, horseradish cream, chimmichurri, arugula 24
- Grilled corn “street cart style” cotija, lime aioli $8
- Flash fried Brussels sprouts, agrodolce, pecans $8
- Grilled asparagus, crispy 5-minute egg, piquillo vin $9
- Crispy duck confit, southern fried cabbage, mustard jus 13
- Salt roasted Georgia white shrimp, comeback sauce $12
